FAQ

Grooming

  1. Where are you located?

I am located in the hospital area of central Nanaimo.  Because I groom out of my home, I do not post my address online for security reasons.  If you are interested in setting up an appointment, please call or text me at 250-714-6781, email me at grooming@mostlymischief.com or contact me through my Facebook page.

  2. Where can I park?

Please park either in my driveway or on the boulevard.  Do not park in front of the neighbors' yards and do not block their driveways even if you will only be there for a few minutes.

  3. What are your business hours?

Mostly Mischief is open Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Friday, however I operate by appointment only so the salon is only open when I have appointments.  I do have to comply with city bylaws, meaning I cannot take any appointments before 7am and all dogs must be picked up by 9m.  Most of the time my earliest appointment is 9am and my last appointment is 2pm, but that may vary day to day. To check availability of appointments please call, text, or email me.

  4. How do I make an appointment?

You can make an appointment by phone at 250-714-6781 (call or text), by emailing grooming@mostlymischief.com, or by messaging me through my Facebook page.  You can also pre-book your next appointment when your dog comes in for a groom.

  5. Do you take walk-ins?

Technically I do not accept walk-ins, as I am open by appointment only.  However if you give me a call or text I may be able to fit you in right away if I have available appointment times, or if you are just wanting a nail trim or other quick service and I am already in the salon with another appointment I would be happy to squeeze you in as long as you let me know you are coming!

  6. Can I stay with my pet while they are being groomed?

For services that only take a few minutes you are welcome to stay with your pet, but for any kind of groom or bath service I highly recommend that you leave your pet with me until the service is completed.  Pets are often excited or nervous when their owner is present and this can make it more difficult and less safe for the pet and the groomer.  I strive to make your pet's visit to the salon as stress-free as possible, and dogs are usually much more calm when their owner is not present.  I can reduce the time your dog is in the salon by calling you before they are ready to go, so by the time you arrive they are all finished and do not have to wait.

  7. Will my dog be kenneled during his appointment?

I do my best to keep my furry clients cage-free, but due to time constraints, shop safety, and each individual pets’ behaviour, your pet may spend some time in a kennel. Each kennel has clean water and a blanket that is replaced between pets.  To reduce the amount of time your pet spends in the kennel, drop off and pick up your pet at the designated times.  I do not permit dogs from different families to interact with each other, so if there is a slight overlap in the dropping off of one dog and the pickup of another, one of the dogs will be kenneled for safety reasons.  Any pets that show kennel aggression or are displaying unsafe kennel behaviours such as digging or chewing at the bars or are barking incessantly out of stress will be tethered to the floor for their safety while they await pickup.

  8. What is your cancellation policy?

If you have to cancel your appointment, please let me know as soon as possible!

Frequent no-shows or cancellations without proper notice may be required to pay in advance before another grooming appointment is scheduled, and I reserve the right to refuse service to a client who frequently cancels without adequate notice or fails to show up for their appointments.

  9. Do you require any vaccinations?

I do not require proof of vaccinations, but I strongly recommend that your dog be fully vaccinated before coming into the salon.  Though I clean and disinfect after every pet, transmission of germs is still possible and I want to keep every pet safe and healthy.

I also strongly recommend that puppies wait to be groomed until they have received their second set of shots (usually given at 12 weeks), as they are not fully protected until then.  A puppy's immune system is immature, making them more susceptible to illness.

  10. Do you use heated cage dryers?

No.  I do not use heated cage dryers or forced air cage dryers.  I will occasionally use a box fan on a caged dog to help dry them if the blow dryer is too stressful for them.  Dogs are never left unattended while cage drying.

    - Blueberry facial scrub.  A gentle tearless shampoo for removing crud around the eyes and face wrinkles.

    - Nail clipping and grinding.  Nails are cut as short as possible and filed so they are smooth.

    - Ear cleaning / plucking.  Ears are plucked of extra hair (if necessary) and gently cleaned with ear cleaning solution to remove dirt and debris.

    - Anal gland expression (if requested).  External expression of the anal glands.  Only done if requested and if necessary.

    - Hair cut to the owner's specifications. I will go over your dog and discuss what you are wanting the dog to look like and what is possible to do with the dog's coat type and condition and come up with a look that fits your dog's lifestyle.

    - Perfume (if requested).  A light spritz of scent.

    - Bandana or bows (if requested).  Fun accessories to add to your dog's cute new look.

  2. What is included in a bath and tidy?

    A bath and tidy includes:

    - Bath with premium shampoo & conditioner.  I use only high-quality pet products and have several different shampoo types available such as degreasing, shed control, hypoallergenic, fluff up, and whitening.

    - Blueberry facial scrub.  A gentle tearless shampoo for removing crud around the eyes and face wrinkles.

    - Brush out (any matting will incur extra fees of $5 / 10 minutes).

    - Feet, face, and sanitary trim (as necessary).  Dogs that need grooming will get around their eyes trimmed, pads shaved, feet rounded, and their sanitary area clipped.  Short haired dogs that do not normally get haircuts will only get their pads, feet, and sanitary trimmed as necessary.

    - Perfume (if requested).  A light spritz of scent.

    - Bandana or bows (if requested).  Fun accessories to add to your dog's cute new look.

  3. How long does it take for my dog to be groomed?

It all depends on the size, breed, hair type, condition, and behaviour of the dog.  Most small dogs in good condition can be finished in an hour to an hour and a half, most medium dogs in good condition take about two hours, and most large dogs in good condition take up to three hours.  If the dog has mats, is obese or has other issues that make it difficult to stand, or has behavioral issues, it may take longer.  When you drop off your dog, I will let you know approximately how long it will take.  I can contact you when your dog is just about ready so they are in the salon for as short a time as possible.

  4. Do you do daycare or boarding?

I do not do daycare or boarding, but if a dog is receiving a groom or bath and the owner must leave the dog for longer than the time it takes to groom them I can provide care for an additional charge ($30 for up to 6 hours, $50 for 6-12 hours).  During this care the dog will be given water (no food unless provided by the owner), toys, and bathroom breaks.

I do not offer this service unless the dog is also getting a bath or groom.  The daycare fee is in addition to any groom or bath fees.

If your dog needs to stay in the salon for additional time, I must be notified beforehand as I have very limited space and can only care for one dog (or two from the same family) at a time.

  5. Do you have any breed or size restrictions?

I am limited to small dogs only at this time, as most large dogs cannot fit in my tub, and my dryer is not powerful enough for large dogs with thick coats such as Siberian Huskies.

  6. Do you groom cats?

No.  At this time I am only grooming dogs.

  7. Do you offer pickup or drop-off services?

At this time I am not offering pickup or drop-off services, but I am willing to help make arrangements under certain circumstances.  Please ask me in advance if you need assistance getting your dog to or from your appointment, as I may be able to help out for an extra charge if time permits.

  8. My dog requires a medicated shampoo, if I bring the shampoo can you use it?

Yes, as long as the shampoo is a dog-specific shampoo in its original container (or separate container with provided instructions).  I will apply the medicated shampoo as the directions indicate on the bottle.  You can either take the shampoo back with you or leave it in my care for next time.

I will not use human shampoo or other non-shampoo products such as Dawn on your pet.

Prices

  1. What types of payments do you accept?

I currently accept cash, personal cheques, Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover Card.  I do not accept debit cards at this time.  Bounced cheques will incur a $30 fee and may prevent you from paying by cheque in the future.

  2. How much will my dog's groom cost?

All prices depend on the size, breed, hair type, length, and condition of the dog.  My base prices are as follows:

Extra Small Dog: $50 full groom, $35 bath & tidy

Small Dog: $55 full groom, $40 bath & tidy

Medium Dog: $70 full groom, $55 bath & tidy

Large Dog: $85 full groom, $70 bath & tidy

5% GST will be added to all prices.  Other fees will apply for matting, additional deshedding, fleas, and special handling.

I will make every effort to provide you with an accurate estimate at the time your pet is dropped off for grooming. However, once the grooming process begins, it may be necessary to adjust the price. If I feel that I have to adjust the estimate by more than $10 above the quoted price, I will make every effort to contact you before finishing the groom.

  3. Will my dog's groom cost less if I bathe the dog or do the nails myself?

To get the best possible finish on your dog's groom, as well as save wear and tear on my tools, I have to be the one who bathes and dries the dog.  There will be no discount given if the dog is already bathed, as I will have to bathe the dog again anyways.

Nail trimming (as well as grinding if the dog will allow it) is included in all of my groom and bath services at no additional cost, so if the nails are already done there will not be a discount given.

  4. How can I save money on my dog's groom?

There are several ways to save money on your dog's groom.  The most important one is to learn how to properly maintain your pet's coat at home.  When the dog is brushed out, I can complete the groom more quickly and easily with no additional charges.

You can also extend the time between grooming appointments by coming in for a touch-up trimming in between grooms.  I charge $10 to trim the face, feet, and sanitary area without a bath or full groom, and for $20 you can also get the nails trimmed and the ears cleaned.  By maintaining the important areas, you can go a couple more weeks in between grooms if you are continuing to brush the dog at home.

Keeping your dog in a shorter haircut will also allow you to go a bit longer in between grooms.

Take advantage of the bath and tidy service if your dog is not ready for a full haircut but needs to be freshened up.  The bath and tidy is $15 less than a full groom and I will trim the dog's face, feet, and sanitary area as well as give the dog a bath and brush out and trim the nails and clean the ears.  Alternating between a bath and tidy and a full groom can extend the time between full grooms and save you money.

There is a $5 discount for booking your dog's next appointment within 6 weeks.  If your dog needs a full groom every 8 weeks, try booking every 6 weeks instead to take advantage of the discount and keep your dog looking great!

Additional Fees

  1. What if my pet is matted?

Matted pets, depending on the severity of the matting, always incur additional charges.  If the matting can be humanely brushed out, a fee of $5 for every 10 minutes of dematting will be applied to the final bill.  If mats cannot be humanely brushed out in a timely manner, with no distress to the dog, the pet will be shaved to whatever length allows a clipper blade to get underneath the matting.  If the matting is enough that the pet must be shaved, a flat fee of $10 will be added to the final bill.

  2. What if my dog is difficult to groom?

I have a lot of experience grooming difficult dogs, and have developed several calming and restraint techniques to help finish the groom with the least amount of stress possible.  However, if a dog is too difficult to safely finish the groom, the service will be discontinued and the dog will be sent home partially finished.  Depending on how much was done, you may be required to pay for a portion of the groom.

If the dog requires special handling (either because of aggression or because of difficulty standing) there may be additional charges.

  3. What if my dog has fleas?

If fleas are found on the pet, it will be given a flea adulticide pill Capstar for an additional $15.  This will kill any live fleas on the pet for 24 hours, but it will not prevent any new fleas from jumping onto the pet so I recommend you treat your dog with quality monthly flea control products from your veterinarian as soon as possible.

Severe infestations may incur a higher additional charge as I have to take extra precautions to ensure the fleas do not spread, which may involve isolating the affected pet and using a pesticide spray around the salon.

  4. What if my dog has ticks?

If the pet has any ticks, I can remove up to five of them for $5, or you can choose to have them left for you or a vet to remove later.  Pets with more than 5 ticks will be referred to a vet for removal.
